Andrea Goldsmith has officially started her role as the seventh president of Stony Brook University. Goldsmith, who is recognized for her leadership in engineering and higher education, comes to the position after serving as the first woman engineering dean at Princeton University and being elected to the National Academy of Engineering.
Goldsmith spent several months meeting with faculty, students, staff, healthcare professionals, alumni, and partners across Stony Brook’s campuses before beginning her tenure. She said she was inspired by the community’s energy and expressed enthusiasm about leading the university.
“My heart is filled with absolute joy,” said Goldsmith. “The warmth and energy of the Stony Brook community have been both exhilarating and inspiring. I am honored to lead this extraordinary university and to build on its powerful legacy of innovation, impact, and inclusion.”
She emphasized that changes in higher education present opportunities for institutions like Stony Brook. “While the landscape of higher education is changing rapidly, I believe these challenges open the door for bold, forward-thinking action,” she said. “Stony Brook is exceptionally positioned to thrive—driving upward mobility, groundbreaking discovery, and societal impact locally and globally.”
Goldsmith also highlighted her appreciation for Stony Brook’s sense of community: “The students I’ve met are not only deeply grateful for the education they receive but feel a true sense of belonging,” she added. “That is a testament to the dedication of our faculty, staff, and alumni in fostering an environment where everyone can achieve their full potential.”
Originally from New York with strong family ties in the state, Goldsmith recently moved into Sunwood with her husband Arturo. Her children live nearby in New York City.
Looking ahead to her presidency at Stony Brook University, Goldsmith stated: “I’m ready to take the helm of this outstanding university, with pride in our achievements and great ambition for the future. With purpose, joy, and gratitude, I look forward to all that lies ahead.”
