Barbara Streisand’s former townhouse on the Upper East Side led Manhattan’s luxury home contracts last week. The property at 49 East 80th Street, listed for $16 million, was the highest-priced among 22 homes with asking prices of $4 million or more that entered into contract between August 18 and August 24, according to a weekly report from Olshan Realty. This figure is similar to the previous week, which saw 23 such deals.
Streisand purchased the five-story, Art Deco-style townhouse in 1970 for $420,000. The 9,200-square-foot residence first went on the market in June of last year with an initial asking price of $18 million. Built in 1930, the home features eight bedrooms, five bathrooms, a landscaped garden, three terraces, an elevator, and six wood-burning fireplaces. Cathy Franklin and Alexis Bodenheimer from Corcoran represented the listing.
The second priciest deal involved a co-op apartment in Carnegie Hill at 1050 Fifth Avenue. Its asking price was just under $13 million—substantially lower than its previous sale price of $16.5 million when Dick Tarlow and Kristin Kehrberg acquired it about nine years ago. The unit spans 4,000 square feet and includes four bedrooms and four bathrooms along with three terraces offering Central Park views. Originally two separate apartments combined during renovations in 2011, it was listed for $17 million in March of last year before selling after a bidding war. Anne Easton from Douglas Elliman handled this listing.
Among all properties that found buyers last week, there were 17 condos, three co-ops, and two townhouses. Combined asking prices totaled $151 million with an average price of $6.9 million and a median price of $5.6 million per property. Most homes remained on the market for over two years and typically sold at a discount of around 17 percent from their original listing prices.
