The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has announced that maintenance work on the dam at Cameron Pond in Steuben County is complete. The project brings the dam, located within Cameron State Forest, into compliance with state safety requirements intended to lower flood risk, preserve natural habitats, and protect public safety.
Cameron Pond was closed in March 2025 for upgrades to the auxiliary spillway, low-level outlet, and earthen embankment. According to the DEC, improvements also included new gravel and grading for both the access road and parking lot.
Outdoor recreation at Cameron Pond is now allowed again, though water levels remain low. The design and construction were funded through New York Works.
