The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) will hold its 26th annual Salmon River Fish Hatchery Open House on Saturday, September 27, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The event will take place at the Salmon River Fish Hatchery in Altmar, Oswego County.
“As autumn brings cooler nights and falling leaves, salmon begin their migration home,” said Region 7 Director Dereth Glance. “DEC invites outdoor enthusiasts of all ages, abilities, backgrounds, and interests to attend the 26th annual Salmon River Fish Hatchery Open House for the rare behind-the-scenes view of how DEC supports world-class trout and salmon fishing. This event celebrates the return of trout and salmon to spawn and the hatchery’s successful stocking program that enhances New York State’s robust Great Lakes fishery.”
The open house is free and will occur rain or shine. It coincides with National Hunting and Fishing Day, which was established by Congress in 1972 to encourage public participation in outdoor activities and recognize hunters’ and anglers’ contributions to conservation efforts.
Guided tours of the hatchery will be offered between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., providing visitors with access to areas not usually open to the public. The tour route includes one flight of concrete stairs. Wheelchair- and stroller-accessible observation decks outside allow guests to watch migrating salmon. Visitors can also see various fish species in indoor aquaria displays.
Outdoor activities for youth include casting practice with fishing rods, while inside the auditorium participants can try fly tying and air archery. Several conservation organizations, recreation groups, and clubs will host displays about their work related to the Salmon River corridor and Lake Ontario ecosystem.
The Salmon River area is known for its high-quality trout and salmon fishery supported by Lake Ontario migrations. Hiking trails are available nearby, including an accessible quarter-mile trail leading to two viewpoints overlooking a 110-foot waterfall. Currently, the Lower Fly Fishing Section remains closed due to low water levels.
Additional information about the hatchery operations, local management plans, unique areas such as Salmon River Falls, or details about advisory boards can be found on DEC’s website.
For questions regarding the event, Betsy Ukeritis at DEC can be reached at 315-314-0768. The hatchery is open for self-guided tours daily from April through November between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.
