The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Region 3 is inviting volunteers to participate in “Wildlife Day” on Saturday, October 4, 2025. The event will take place at the Stony Kill Farm Environmental Education Center in Dutchess County.
Wildlife Day aims to engage participants in wildlife conservation service projects and educational workshops. It is part of the Love Our New York Lands Stewardship Days Campaign, which promotes stewardship and highlights outdoor recreation opportunities across the state through themed events throughout the year. The event is organized in partnership with Parks and Trails New York and the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.
Volunteer registration for Wildlife Day is currently open. Residents are encouraged to join community efforts such as cleanups, enhancement activities, or educational programs.
At Stony Kill Farm, volunteers will meet at the barn after parking by the farm pond at the south end of the property. Participants are asked not to park across from the barn due to vendor setup for Harvest Fest happening later that day. Erin Sausville can be contacted for more information.
The scheduled project involves cleaning up the Pollinator Garden following a busy summer season. Volunteers will assist with weeding and mulching. Afterward, DEC Environmental Program Specialists Tom and Erin will lead a birding program focused on identifying local bird species attracted to the gardens and surrounding habitat.
Attendees are advised to bring water, snacks, and sturdy closed-toed shoes. Gardening gloves will be available but participants may bring their own. Binoculars for birding will also be provided or volunteers can use their own equipment.
All ages are welcome to participate in Wildlife Day activities. Registration details are available through Parks & Trails NY.
Following Wildlife Day activities, attendees can stay for Harvest Fest from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., which features homemade soups, crafts, vendors, food options, as well as barn and livestock tours.
“Wildlife Day provides a perfect opportunity to participate in wildlife conservation service projects and educational workshops across the state, celebrating New York’s diverse wildlife and habitats.”
