The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Region 2 is inviting the public to participate in “Wildlife Day” on Saturday, October 4, 2025. The event will take place at two locations: St. Francis Woodlands in Staten Island and Gantry Plaza State Park in Queens.
Wildlife Day is part of the Love Our New York Lands Stewardship Days Campaign, which aims to promote year-round stewardship and highlight outdoor recreation opportunities across the state. The campaign features a series of themed days designed to encourage community involvement in conservation efforts.
The DEC is partnering with Parks and Trails New York and the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation for this initiative. Volunteers can register to join local cleanup, enhancement, or educational activities.
At St. Francis Woodlands, volunteers are invited from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Participants will meet at the kiosk in the southern parking lot at 23 Cliffwood Ave, Staten Island. The morning will include stewardship work followed by a guided hike along an accessible boardwalk. Organizers say, “Join us for a morning of giving back to the forest that gives so much to us. We’ll roll up our sleeves for some stewardship work, then enjoy a guided hike along the accessible boardwalk to learn how New York City’s urban forests keep our air clean, our streets cool, and our wildlife thriving. All are welcome – no experience necessary. Come for some or come for all and leave with a deeper connection to the city’s wild spaces.” Attendees are advised to bring close-toed shoes, water bottles, and suitable clothing for outdoor activity.
In Queens at Gantry Plaza State Park’s Pier 4, activities run from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., featuring a free fishing clinic and stewardship event organized by DEC and State Parks staff. According to organizers: “Join DEC and State Parks for a free fishing clinic and stewardship event for Wildlife Day at Gantry Plaza State Park, Pier 4. During this special event, participants can join in a 2-part program. Learn how to fish with the DEC and help the State Parks community science program survey for eels and assess water quality of the East River (State Parks programming begins at 2 p.m.). During the fishing clinic, all gear and bait will be provided, and no fishing license is required to participate. There is no registration required for this FREE event, but it is first come, first served as space is limited.”
The events are open to people of all ages or those aged 13 years or older depending on location requirements.
