The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is collaborating with the Massena Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) and local partners to organize a youth waterfowl and pheasant hunt in St. Lawrence County. The event will be held at the Wilson Hill Wildlife Management Area and targets junior hunters between the ages of 12 and 15.

The program begins with an educational session at the Massena Rod and Gun Club on September 21, followed by a hunting day on September 27. Participation in the event is free for youth within the eligible age range. Organizers will provide equipment if needed.

Eligible participants must hold a New York State small game hunting license and register with the Harvest Information Program (H.I.P.). The event is hosted by the Massena Rod and Gun Club and sponsored by several organizations, including the New York Conservation Officers Association (NYCOA), NWTF, and St. Lawrence County Sportsmen’s Federation.

For those interested in joining, registration should be completed before September 21. Additional information can be obtained by contacting Lt. Troy Basford or ECO Ian Helmer, or by registering online at the St. Lawrence County Fall Youth Hunt event page.

Mentored hunting opportunities are available throughout New York, with events added regularly, especially during late summer. Interested individuals can find more details on upcoming mentored hunts through DEC’s Mentored Hunting Opportunities page.

Governor Kathy Hochul has launched initiatives to encourage outdoor activity among young people and families in New York. The “Get Offline, Get Outside” campaign aims to reduce screen time and promote recreation for better mental and physical health among children and their families. The governor’s broader efforts also include signing legislation designed to protect minors from addictive social media content and safeguard their personal data from online platforms.
