The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has announced the opening of its annual Arbor Day Poster contest. The event invites photographers and artists to submit images that highlight the significance of trees. The winning submission will be used as the official 2026 State Arbor Day Poster.

Commissioner Amanda Lefton said, “Trees are powerful allies in building resilient communities, ecosystems, and a healthier future. As we work together towards our goal of planting 25 million trees by 2033, this poster competition is a chance for New Yorkers to share their vision of the beauty and benefits of trees and to inspire others to celebrate, plant, and protect them.”

Richard A. Ball, New York State Agriculture Commissioner, added, “Trees contribute to the beautiful scenery that makes up New York’s landscapes and to our agricultural story by providing us with the first crop of the season of sweet maple syrup. They also power our wood products industry, clean our air, and improve water quality. The annual Arbor Day Poster Contest is a wonderful celebration of New York’s trees and their importance to the daily lives of New Yorkers and visitors alike. I encourage everyone to take part in the Arbor Day Poster Contest and help us showcase their significance.”

This year’s theme is “Trees for the Future.” Submissions should illustrate how people connect with trees, emphasize tree planting for coming generations, and recognize how trees help communities adapt to climate change.

Entries must feature trees located in New York State. Each participant can submit one original photo or artwork reflecting the theme using an online form on DEC’s website. The deadline for entries is November 30, 2025.

The chosen image will appear on posters distributed statewide at events such as Arbor Day celebrations, the New York State Fair, schools, libraries, conservation councils, and other venues.

The contest is organized by the New York State Arbor Day Committee—comprised of DEC along with several partner organizations including the Department of Agriculture and Markets.

Additional details about contest rules are available through DEC’s official site or via email at [email protected]. Previous years’ posters can be requested from local DEC forestry offices or by calling 518-402-9428 while supplies last.
