The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Region 3 is inviting volunteers to participate in ‘Wildlife Day’ on Saturday, October 4, 2025, at the Stony Kill Farm Environmental Education Center in Dutchess County.
The event is designed to engage the public in wildlife conservation service projects and educational workshops across New York. It is part of the Love Our New York Lands Stewardship Days Campaign, which aims to promote year-round stewardship and highlight outdoor recreation opportunities through themed events. The campaign is organized in partnership with Parks and Trails New York and the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.
Volunteer registration for Wildlife Day is now open. DEC encourages community members to take part in cleanup, enhancement, or educational activities in their area.
At Stony Kill Farm, volunteers will meet at the barn after parking by the farm pond at the south end of the property. Parking directly across from the barn is reserved for vendors participating in Harvest Fest later that day. The main volunteer project involves cleaning up the Pollinator Garden after summer use, including weeding and mulching. Following this work, DEC Environmental Program Specialists Tom and Erin will lead a birding program focused on identifying local bird species attracted to the gardens and surrounding habitat.
Erin Sausville can be contacted for more information about participation.
Participants are advised to bring water, snacks, and sturdy closed-toed shoes. Gardening gloves will be available but personal gloves may also be brought. Binoculars will be provided for birdwatching; attendees may also bring their own equipment.
All ages are welcome to join. Registration can be completed at Parks & Trails NY.
“Wildlife Day provides a perfect opportunity to participate in wildlife conservation service projects and educational workshops across the state, celebrating New York’s diverse wildlife and habitats,” according to organizers.
