The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Region 8 is inviting members of the public to participate in “Wildlife Day” on Saturday, October 4, 2025. The event will take place at Seneca Meadows Wetlands Preserve and is being organized in partnership with the Friends of the Montezuma Wetlands Complex.

According to DEC, Wildlife Day offers an opportunity for people to take part in wildlife conservation service projects and educational workshops throughout New York State. The event is also part of the Love Our New York Lands Stewardship Days Campaign, which aims to promote stewardship and highlight outdoor recreation areas by hosting themed events during the year. The campaign is a collaborative effort involving Parks and Trails New York as well as the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.

Registration for Wildlife Day is now open. Community members are encouraged to join local cleanups, enhancement activities, or educational events.

The specific activity at Seneca Meadows Wetlands Preserve will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Volunteers are asked to meet staff in the preserve’s gravel parking lot off Black Brook Road. Cassidy Attanasio can be contacted for more information at [email protected] or (315) 365-3588 ext. 201.

Participants will work with Montezuma Audubon and DEC staff to collect native seeds within the 576-acre preserve, which provides habitat for various plant and animal species. The seeds collected will be used within the Montezuma Wetlands Complex to support habitat improvement efforts.

Volunteers should wear long pants and closed-toe shoes—preferably waterproof—as some seed collection may occur off-trail in tall vegetation. All necessary equipment will be provided by organizers, but participants may want sun or rain protection depending on weather conditions.

There are no running water facilities on site; attendees are advised to use bathroom facilities before arriving, though a porta-potty is available in the parking lot. Lunch will be provided by Friends of the Montezuma Wetlands Complex. Registration should be completed at least 24 hours prior to attending. The event is suitable for individuals aged 13 and older.

“Join Montezuma Audubon and DEC staff for native seed collection at Seneca Meadows Wetlands Preserve. The preserve is 576-acres of wildlife habitat and recreational trails and is home to a variety of species of animals and plants. All seeds collected will be seeded within the Montezuma Wetlands Complex to improve and enhance wildlife habitat,” according to organizers.
