The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) has issued a statement recognizing the service and sacrifice of military veterans on Veterans Day in the United States and Remembrance Day in Canada. The union expressed its gratitude to those who have served, emphasizing their role in defending freedom and democracy.
According to Brian Bryant, International President of IAM, “We owe a deep debt of gratitude to the women and men who have been on the front lines defending our freedom, protecting our democracy, and the ideals that unite us. Their courage, sacrifice, and commitment to service represent the best of all of us.”
Bryant highlighted how many veterans continue their dedication by supporting working families after returning home. “The same dedication that drives our veterans to defend our nation is what motivates them to build a better future for working families when they return home. Their leadership, discipline, and sense of unity strengthen our union and inspire everyone to keep fighting for dignity, justice, and respect at work,” he said.
This year marked a significant achievement for IAM. Through its Veterans Services Program, IAM became the first labor union officially recognized as a National Veterans Service Organization (VSO) by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). This recognition underscores IAM’s commitment to supporting members who are veterans by providing them with direct access to essential benefits and trusted representation within the VA system.
“This historic designation highlights our union’s commitment to supporting those who have served in the armed forces. It ensures that IAM military veterans and their families now have direct access to essential benefits, trusted representation, and a strong advocate helping them navigate the system they have honorably earned,” Bryant stated.
The message concluded with appreciation for all veterans: “To all IAM veterans and every veteran: Thank you! Your courage and service remind us what true solidarity looks like. We may never fully repay the sacrifice you have made, but we can—and must—honor it: by supporting each other, fighting for peace and equity, and ensuring every veteran and their family receive the care, opportunities, and respect they deserve.”
