The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) New Mexico State Council convened in Ruidoso, New Mexico, for a weekend meeting focused on strengthening union organizing, legislative involvement, and communication among local chapters. The gathering brought together IAM members from across the state to discuss strategies for increasing the union’s influence in workplaces and communities.
John Dyrcz, President of the IAM New Mexico State Council and member of Local 794, opened the event by emphasizing the need for collaboration and commitment within the labor movement. “Our state council meeting went great,” said Dyrcz. “Over the past two days, we laid down a strong foundation for the 2026 election cycle and updated our bylaws to make sure we have solid ground for picking labor-friendly candidates and next year’s elections. I want to see continued participation, and I hope some new individuals will volunteer to give their time and talents to state council leadership. My message for our delegates is to stay engaged, activate, agitate, and organize.”
Dora Cervantes, IAM General Secretary-Treasurer, delivered a “State of Our Union” update. She highlighted ongoing union growth, recent contract achievements, and national campaigns supporting workers’ rights. Cervantes encouraged delegates to build on the IAM’s tradition of advocacy.
Robert “Bobby” Martinez, IAM Western Territory General Vice President, addressed issues facing federal employees and contract workers. He discussed the union’s efforts to protect fair pay, benefits, and workplace protections.
Richie Johnsen, General Vice President of IAM Air Transport Territory, spoke about the union’s air transport campaigns and shared updates on negotiations with airline carriers. He noted that successes in one division can benefit the broader organization.
Josh Hartford, Special Assistant to the IAM International President for the Rail Division, provided a report on current challenges in the rail industry. He also recognized Local 331’s first participation in the state council meeting.
Other speakers included Loren Almeroth, IAM Assistant Legislative and Political Director, and DeLane Adams, IAM Assistant Communications Director.
The event included discussions on leadership development and political advocacy, with a focus on strengthening relationships with labor-supportive elected officials. Delegates updated bylaws to prepare for upcoming elections and reinforced their commitment to union organizing efforts across New Mexico.
