The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) honored workers who lost their lives or were injured on the job during a ceremony held at the William W. Winpisinger Education and Technology Center in Hollywood, Md., according to a May 6 announcement.
The event, which took place on Workers’ Memorial Day, brought together IAM members, families, and union colleagues to remember those affected by workplace tragedies over the past year. Names of deceased members were read aloud as part of the commemoration.
Jody Bennett, IAM Resident General Vice President, addressed attendees and said that 15 names were added to the IAM Workers’ Memorial this year. “That is five too many,” said Bennett. “Far too many workers are still losing their lives simply for going to work, and that must never be acceptable. It is our No. 1 duty to protect our Brothers, Sisters, and Siblings.”
A recent report from the AFL-CIO highlights ongoing concerns about workplace safety standards and notes that injuries and fatalities remain preventable decades after the Occupational Safety and Health Administration was established.
As part of its observance of Workers’ Memorial Day, IAM reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for safer workplaces for all employees.
