The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM Union) has called on New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy to sign the Motor Vehicle Open Recall Notice and Fair Compensation Act (A4380/S3309) into law without amendments. The legislation, which recently passed the state legislature with bipartisan support, aims to ensure that auto dealership technicians receive equal pay for warranty repairs as they do for non-warranty work.
According to the IAM Union, this measure is intended to improve wages and establish a fair standard for thousands of auto mechanics across New Jersey. The union emphasized the importance of equal compensation for technicians regardless of whether their work falls under warranty.
“This bill is about fairness for the hardworking men and women who keep New Jersey’s cars and trucks safely on the road. Auto technicians deserve to be paid equally for their skills and labor, whether the work is under warranty or not,” stated the IAM Union.
The union also urged Governor Murphy to reject any conditional vetoes that could weaken provisions related to labor time calculations, which they argue are crucial in ensuring accurate pay for repair work. “Our Union is calling on Murphy to reject any requests for a conditional veto that would weaken labor time provisions, which are vital to ensuring auto technicians are paid accurately for the time they spend on repairs.”
Representing hundreds of automotive technicians throughout New Jersey, the IAM Union highlighted that signing this bill would not only benefit workers and their families but also help attract and retain skilled professionals in the field. “We represent hundreds of skilled automotive technicians throughout New Jersey. Gov. Murphy has an opportunity to not only improve the quality of life for workers and their families, but will also help recruit and retain a strong auto technician workforce to keep New Jersey moving forward.”
