The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) has called on the U.S. Senate to pass the Protect America’s Workforce Act (H.R. 2550), which seeks to restore collective bargaining rights for federal workers. The union’s appeal follows an executive order issued by President Donald Trump on March 27 that ended collective bargaining for federal unions.

IAM International President Brian Bryant addressed members of both the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate in letters, urging them to support the legislation. “IAM Union strongly supports the Protect America’s Workforce Act for restoring collective bargaining rights to the nation’s federal workforce,” Bryant stated.

The bill, introduced in the House by Representatives Jared Golden (D-ME) and Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA), has received bipartisan backing.

According to IAM, collective bargaining is important because it provides workplace protections and helps ensure better service to the public. The union also noted that federal employees play a vital role in serving citizens across the country.

IAM represents thousands of federal workers, including those within its affiliate, the National Federation of Federal Employees (NFFE-IAM), which represents about 110,000 federal workers nationwide.

“Federal workers are essential, and they’re committed to serving the American people. These workers deserve the right of collective bargaining, which provides protections in the workplace and better service to the public, just to name a few benefits,” said IAM leadership.

The IAM has encouraged supporters to contact their congressional representatives in support of passing H.R. 2550.
