The IAM Wood Pulp & Paper Council (WPPC) organized its annual Chillin’ & Grillin’ for GDA Virtual BBQ Competition, continuing its support for Guide Dogs of America | Tender Loving Canines (GDA | TLC). The event, held online, featured 20 participants who prepared a variety of barbecue dishes in an effort to raise funds for the charity.

Funds raised from the competition will help provide guide and service dogs to individuals in need. According to organizers, this year’s virtual format did not diminish the sense of community or enthusiasm among participants.

“Our cooks, sponsors, donors, and judges made this event a true success,” said IAM Wood, Pulp and Paper Council President Matt Murdaugh. “The passion and generosity that make this tradition so meaningful.”

The competition named Nina Flack as Grand Champion. Matt Murdaugh took second place, with Don Barker finishing third. Other category winners included Dave Lehive for Pork Rib Champion and Brandon Bryant for Cook’s Choice Champion. Best of Territory honors went to Nina Flack (Southern), Brandon Bryant (Western), Andrew Peltier (Midwest), and James Little (Headquarters).

Sponsorship played a significant role in the fundraiser’s outcome. Brian Bryant served as $5,000 Title Sponsor in his capacity as International President. Additional $1,500 Choice Sponsors included the IAM Wood, Pulp and Paper Council itself, IAM District W2021, IAM District W24, IAM Air Transport Territory, Employee Benefit Systems, and the IAM Southern Territory. Prime Sponsors and Select Sponsors also contributed alongside individual donors.

Judges for the competition were Yvette Sheehan and LJ Brown from GDA | TLC along with Laura Ewan from the IAM Legal Department.

A raffle was also part of the event; all 33 entrants received prizes such as cutting boards, watches, merchandise from GDA | TLC, and items from Union Sportsmen’s Alliance.
