The Jazz Loft @ Southampton Concert Series will wrap up its spring and summer season with a performance titled “Abstract Angularity” on August 28 at the Avram Theater at Stony Brook Southampton. The event will feature The Jazz Loft Jazz Orchestra, an 18-piece ensemble led by Thomas Manuel. Manuel is the founder of The Jazz Loft and serves as the Stony Brook University Jazz Department Endowed Artist in Residence Fellow.
According to organizers, the concert aims to highlight the qualities represented by jazz orchestras, including patience, honesty, playfulness, emotion, courage and will.
“The voice of the Jazz orchestra speaks of the characteristics which it embodies: patience, honesty, playfulness, emotion, courage and will,” stated organizers.
The series has marked its first season at The Avram Theater with strong attendance from local communities. Organizers say it has brought both traditional and innovative jazz to audiences in Southampton and across Long Island’s East End. This initiative is part of broader efforts to make Stony Brook Southampton a center for arts programming as well as community engagement and education.
“The series is part of an ongoing effort to revitalize the Stony Brook Southampton campus as a hub for the arts, community and education,” according to organizers.
Each concert this season combined historical perspectives on jazz with contemporary interpretations while providing educational elements for attendees. Organizers note that these performances align with The Jazz Loft’s mission centered on preservation, education and live performance.
“The theme of each performance looked at jazz both historically and contemporarily, incorporating extraordinary entertainment and education. The Jazz Loft’s mission is one of jazz preservation, education and performance, and this partnership with Stony Brook Southampton provides East End residents with the opportunity to experience and learn about great jazz first-hand,” they said.
Tickets are available for purchase online at $36 for general admission. Seniors can attend for $33 while current SBU students pay $18.
