John M. Murphy, MD, president and CEO of Nuvance Health, will retire at the end of December 2025 after more than forty years in health care leadership and clinical practice. Dr. Murphy has led Nuvance Health since its creation in 2019, following the merger of Western Connecticut Health Network and Health Quest.
Before moving into administrative roles, Dr. Murphy worked as a neurologist and was recognized for his patient care. As CEO, he oversaw Nuvance Health’s growth into a regional health system known for its focus on quality and community care. Most recently, he played a key role in integrating Nuvance Health into Northwell Health.
Under Dr. Murphy’s leadership, Nuvance Health expanded to a seven-hospital system that is now part of Northwell Health. He emphasized innovation and excellence throughout the organization, including medical education programs and expanding ambulatory care services.
“It has truly been the honor of a lifetime to serve this organization and to work with such talented and compassionate colleagues,” Dr. Murphy said. “The friendships, shared victories and sense of purpose we’ve built together will remain with me always. I am forever grateful to the community and all our supporters for placing their trust in us.”
Dr. Murphy’s tenure included higher patient satisfaction scores, increased employee engagement, and national recognition for quality and safety performance. He established a Global Health Program, launched the Rudy L. Ruggles Biomedical Research Institute to promote biomedical innovation, and developed partnerships with organizations such as the Cleveland Clinic.
He also helped bring more physicians and specialists to the region and supported new specialty care programs in cardiology, oncology, and neuroscience.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, Dr. Murphy advised Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont on testing, vaccination efforts, and hospital management strategies that contributed to one of the lowest Covid-19 mortality rates nationally.
