This week, David Freund, Chief Leadership Officer at the Manufacturers Association of Central New York, emphasized the importance of choosing the right mentors and sources for personal and professional growth.
Freund discussed his ongoing commitment to leadership development. He noted that while there are many opportunities and content available, it is essential to focus on the foundation of learning as much as the content itself.
He shared advice from one of his mentors: “Are you growing, or are you just busy?” Freund said this question highlights how effective mentors help guide individuals toward meaningful progress rather than simply providing information.
Quoting Saint Paul, Freund added: “But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them.”
Freund outlined four criteria for evaluating information sources:
– Is the content meaningful and applicable?
– Can I trust the person behind it?
– Is it authentic or artificially generated noise?
– Does this person’s track record, accomplishments, and values align with mine?
He stated that aligning learning with personal values leads to growth consistent with one’s goals. Freund encouraged readers to be intentional about their learning sources as they plan for the coming year.
He also announced that November 7th will mark the 10th annual Live2Lead leadership summit organized by MACNY. The event aims to bring together leaders for a focused experience in leadership development. According to Freund: “It’s not just another event—it’s an opportunity to grow with purpose.”
Freund concluded by reiterating that who individuals choose to learn from plays a significant role in their growth.
