Nassau County Legislators Scott M. Davis and Viviana L. Russell participated in a community event at Kennedy Memorial Park on January 22 to honor Dr. Emily Moore of Roosevelt during the observance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
The event featured a discussion with Dr. Moore, performances by local youth, a question-and-answer session, and a book signing for “My Journey,” a biography written by Ayanna Moore that details Dr. Moore’s more than six decades of work in civil rights and her commitment to youth development through the Alliance Junior Tennis program.
Legislator Davis said, “As a fearless civil rights advocate, community leader and champion for the children of Roosevelt, Dr. Emily Moore is a hometown hero who showed us the power of using our voices for the greater good. Her life’s work is a beacon for all of us to follow at a time when courage and moral clarity are essential, and I applaud her for continuing to give so freely of herself to build a better future for us all.”
Legislator Russell added, “Dr. Emily Moore is the embodiment of what Maya Angelou meant when she wrote of a ‘Phenomenal Woman’ – she is courageous, conscientious, and unwavering in her commitment to uplifting the lives of all she encounters. It was a privilege to join my colleagues and the community in celebrating a true pioneer who is unwavering in her advocacy.”
The celebration recognized Dr. Moore’s longstanding contributions as both an advocate for civil rights and as someone dedicated to enriching opportunities for young people in Roosevelt.
