Employment in Cumberland County, Maine remained steady between March 2024 and March 2025, according to a report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Mark J. Maggi, Acting Regional Commissioner, stated that employment in York County decreased by 1.2 percent during the same period.

Cumberland County had an employment figure of 188,100 in March 2025, while York County reported 73,800 jobs. Together, these two counties represented 41.6 percent of all covered employment in Maine. Across the United States, the largest counties—those with annual average employment levels of at least 75,000—make up about 73.4 percent of total covered employment.

The average weekly wage in Cumberland rose by 1.5 percent over the year to $1,460. In both Cumberland ($1,460) and York ($1,258), average weekly wages were lower than the national average of $1,589.

Data on employment and wages are also available for Maine’s smaller counties—those with fewer than 75,000 employed in 2024. Among these fourteen counties, all reported wage levels below the national average. Sagadahoc County recorded the highest average weekly wage among them at $1,294; Piscataquis County had the lowest at $903.

Out of all sixteen counties in Maine, two had average weekly wages below $1,000; three were between $1,000 and $1,074; six ranged from $1,075 to $1,149; and five reported wages of $1,150 or more.

Further details on county-level data nationwide can be found in the County Employment and Wages news release and through resources provided by the Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages website.

“The County Employment and Wages release for the second quarter 2025 is scheduled to be released on Wednesday, December 3, 2025.”
