Maine reported 39,000 job openings in June 2025, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. This figure remained unchanged from May. Acting Regional Commissioner Mark J. Maggi stated that “the job openings rate in Maine was 5.6 percent in June, unchanged from the previous month.” Nationally, the job openings rate stood at 4.4 percent in June and 4.6 percent in May.
The ratio of unemployed persons per job opening in Maine was 0.6 for June, indicating a tighter labor market compared to the national measure of 0.9 unemployed persons per job opening. Across the country, 25 states and the District of Columbia had ratios lower than the national average; 18 states had higher ratios, while seven matched it.
In terms of hiring activity, Maine recorded 25,000 hires and 26,000 separations during June. These numbers were consistent with May’s figures—25,000 hires and 25,000 separations. Over the past year ending in June, monthly averages for hires stood at 24,000 and for separations at 22,000.
Of those who separated from their jobs in Maine during June, quits accounted for 15,000 and layoffs or discharges totaled 9,000—compared to May’s figures of 14,000 quits and 10,000 layoffs or discharges. On average over the year leading up to June, quits numbered about 13,000 each month while layoffs and discharges averaged around 8,000.
State-level estimates from this report are produced using data models that incorporate several sources including JOLTS sample surveys as well as other employment statistics programs.
According to Maggi: “the job openings rate in Maine was 5.6 percent in June, unchanged from the previous month.”
