Massachusetts reported 183,000 job openings in June 2025, down from 193,000 in May, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The job openings rate in Massachusetts was 4.7 percent in June, compared to 4.9 percent the previous month. Nationally, the job openings rate stood at 4.4 percent in June and 4.6 percent in May.
Acting Regional Commissioner Mark J. Maggi stated, “The job openings rate in Massachusetts was 4.7 percent in June and 4.9 percent in the previous month.”
The ratio of unemployed persons per job opening in Massachusetts remained at 1.0 for June. Across the United States, twenty-five states and the District of Columbia had ratios lower than the national measure of 0.9 unemployed persons per job opening; eighteen states had higher ratios and seven states matched the national average.
In June, there were 103,000 hires and 108,000 separations reported in Massachusetts, compared to 99,000 hires and an equal number of separations a month earlier. Over the twelve months ending in June, monthly averages for hires stood at 112,000 while separations averaged 101,000 per month.
Of those separated from their jobs in Massachusetts during June, quits accounted for 60,000 and layoffs or discharges totaled 37,000; this compares to May figures of 58,000 quits and 42,000 layoffs or discharges. During the past year quits have averaged about 55,000 per month while layoffs and discharges have averaged approximately 36,000 monthly.
State-level estimates are derived from model-based approaches that combine JOLTS sample data with information from other sources such as the Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages (QCEW) and Current Employment Statistics (CES). Definitions for terms like “job openings,” “hires,” and “separations” are standardized by BLS methodology.
Statistics on levels and rates for other types of separations are not included with state estimates due to their smaller share among total separations.
The next release of State Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey estimates is scheduled for September 17, 2025.
