Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman and the Nassau County Department of Health are working with the Town of North Hempstead to provide free rabies vaccinations for dogs, cats, and ferrets. The clinic is available to all Nassau County residents and will take place on Saturday, October 4th, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Town of North Hempstead Animal Shelter at 75 Marino Avenue in Port Washington.
“I am proud to partner with Supervisor Jen DeSena and the Town of North Hempstead to offer a free rabies vaccination clinic for Nassau pets,” said Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman. “This clinic is a great opportunity for residents to make sure their pets are protected and up to date on their rabies vaccinations.”
“Rabies vaccination for dogs, cats, and domesticated ferrets is required by New York State law,” said Health Commissioner Dr. Irina Gelman. “Nassau County has recently seen more confirmed cases of terrestrial rabies, primarily in raccoons and some feral cats. Ensuring your pet’s rabies vaccination is current helps protect your family and community, and it prevents the need for your pet to face strict quarantine if exposed to an animal that is known to carry and transmit the virus.”
Health officials recommend that dogs, cats, and ferrets older than four months receive their first two shots one year apart followed by booster shots every three years. Dogs must be leashed at all times during the clinic while cats and ferrets should be kept in enclosed carriers.
The event is open to all residents of Nassau County. For additional information about the clinic, residents can contact the Town of North Hempstead Animal Shelter at (516) 869-6311.
