The Nassau County Department of Health (NCDOH) has issued a warning to residents regarding a nationwide recall of ByHeart brand powdered infant formula. This action follows an outbreak of infant botulism cases reported in several states. According to the NCDOH, no confirmed cases have been identified in New York State, but one suspected case has been reported involving a Nassau County infant under one year old who consumed the recalled product. The infant is currently hospitalized and in stable condition.
Since August 2025, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has documented 13 cases of infant botulism across 10 states, all linked to ByHeart brand powdered infant formula.
ByHeart has recalled two specific lots of its powdered infant formula: Lot 206VABP/251261P2 and Lot 206VABP/251131P2, both marked with a “Use by 01 Dec 2026” date. The health department instructs parents and caregivers not to feed infants any formula from these batches and to dispose of the products immediately. They are also advised to note the lot information on the bottom of the package before discarding it.
Infant botulism typically affects children under one year old. Symptoms may include constipation, poor feeding or weak suck, weakness or floppy head control, altered cry, facial weakness, and difficulty breathing in more severe cases. These symptoms can develop up to 30 days after exposure.
“Check their formula products immediately and discard any recalled ByHeart powdered infant formula.
Monitor infants for symptoms of botulism and seek medical care immediately if symptoms develop,” NCDOH urges parents and caregivers.
Healthcare providers are being asked to inquire about formula brands when evaluating infants, inform families about the recall, and report any suspected botulism cases promptly to the Nassau County Department of Health at (516) 227-9639.
