The New York State Department of Health has announced that it will distribute $19.5 million to 21 organizations throughout the state to help students complete their health care education. The funding, provided through the Healthcare Education and Life-skills Program (HELP), will be administered by the department’s Office of Healthcare Workforce Innovation.
Each selected organization, which includes educational institutions, hospitals, and Area Health Education Centers, can receive up to $1 million per year over a five-year period.
State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald said, “When students and trainees withdraw from their programs, we lose future health care workers needed to provide care in our communities. These awards will help eliminate barriers to a career in health care by improving program retention, bolstering the students and our health care.”
The awards are intended to support programs in offering wraparound services and interventions aimed at helping students and trainees achieve their career goals. The HELP initiative is designed to promote a holistic approach in training health care professionals and enhancing their ability to succeed in a changing health care environment.
