The New York State Department of Health is urging residents to adopt healthy lifestyle habits to support brain health, aligning its message with World Brain Day on July 22.
State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald highlighted the importance of summer as an opportunity for outdoor activity and emphasized the role of various habits in protecting brain function. “The summer months are a great time for going outdoors and staying active. Alongside physical exercise, habits like getting enough sleep, healthy eating and being social can help protect your brain,” Dr. McDonald said. “Safeguarding your brain means protecting your future by wearing a helmet when appropriate and maintaining essential tasks such as paying attention, recalling information and multitasking.”
According to the department, maintaining brain health is crucial throughout all stages of life. Activities such as reading, playing games, and pursuing hobbies can challenge the mind, potentially improving cognitive abilities and lowering the risk of dementia.
The department also recommends incorporating daily steps that promote both brain and overall health. Additional resources on supporting brain health are available through the New York State Department of Health’s website.
