The New York State Department of Health has acknowledged the contributions of local public health department workers across the state by including them in the Public Health Works! Honor Roll. This recognition highlights their commitment to safeguarding public health.

Established in 2007, the Public Health Works! Honor Roll aims to recognize the local public health workforce as a key factor in improving overall health standards in New York.

“Local public health workers are essential to maintaining healthy communities,” said State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald. “The success of public health initiatives depends on the dedication of workers providing care and education in the community. We honor their commitment to improving the health of all New Yorkers.”

Commissioners and directors from local health departments are invited to nominate individuals or teams who have shown exemplary performance in delivering essential services within their communities.

The Department depends on 57 local health departments, along with the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, for administering core services such as communicable disease control, chronic disease prevention, community health assessment, environmental health, and emergency preparedness and response. These functions are vital for promoting and protecting residents’ well-being throughout New York State.
