The New York State Department of Health has launched PrEP Aware Week, an annual campaign focused on promoting sexual health and HIV prevention. Running from October 19 to October 25, this year’s theme is “PrEP Revolution,” which highlights the importance of health equity, self-determination, and visibility in HIV prevention efforts.
State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald said, “PrEP Revolution is a powerful theme built on the foundation that access to HIV prevention is a right that allows everyone across generations, identities and communities to make informed choices about their own health. PrEP is up to 99% effective when used appropriately at preventing the transmission of HIV and is an important tool in accomplishing our goal to end the HIV epidemic.”
The initiative is supported by the Department’s AIDS Institute and aims to encourage the use of Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) as a standard and accessible option for preventing HIV infection. The week includes both in-person and virtual events designed to increase awareness among groups considered at higher risk.
This year’s campaign seeks to address ongoing disparities in PrEP usage across New York State. Efforts are being made to reach women as well as Black, Indigenous, and other people of color who have historically had lower rates of PrEP uptake.
Eight ambassadors representing various backgrounds and age groups are featured in this year’s campaign. The youngest ambassador is 17 years old, while the oldest is 78, reflecting six decades of life experience. In addition to Spanish-speaking ambassadors, this year also features an ambassador who speaks Korean and has produced videos in both Korean and English.
A social media toolkit with digital resources has been released for individuals or organizations interested in spreading information about PrEP.
According to the Department of Health, PrEP reduces the risk of sexual transmission of HIV by up to 99 percent when taken correctly. It is available as a daily pill or as an injection administered every two or six months. Those considering PrEP are encouraged to consult with healthcare providers about which option best fits their needs.
Insurance coverage for PrEP has expanded. Medicaid and most insurance plans now cover all associated costs—including appointments, lab tests, and medication—while Medicare provides coverage for both medications and related services without out-of-pocket expenses if accepted by providers. There are also assistance programs available through drug manufacturers and the state’s PrEP Assistance Program (PrEP-AP).
Recent updates from the New York State Clinical Guidelines Program include new oral dosing strategies for PrEP as well as recommendations for integrating injectable options into practice. The guidelines stress shared decision-making between patients and clinicians.
HIV self-test kits can be requested online after completing an eligibility survey; these kits allow individuals to check their status privately at home.
In 2024, Governor Hochul signed legislation prohibiting insurers from discriminating against people prescribed PrEP or requiring prior authorization or copayments for its coverage.
The AIDS Institute remains dedicated to reducing transmission rates and improving health outcomes for those living with HIV, hepatitis C, sexually transmitted infections, people who use drugs, or members of LGBTQ+ communities.
