NYU Langone Health has received recognition from the American Heart Association (AHA) for its rapid and advanced stroke care. The health system’s Comprehensive Stroke Centers, located in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Long Island, as well as the Stroke Center at NYU Langone Hospital—Suffolk, have each been awarded the Get With The Guidelines-Stroke Gold Plus Award for more than two consecutive years.

This award is considered the highest level of recognition in stroke treatment and highlights consistent performance across all campuses. Stroke remains the fifth leading cause of death in the United States.

“The recognition from the American Heart Association shows our dedication to providing timely, effective quality care to our patients in need,” said Koto Ishida, MD, medical director for NYU Langone’s Comprehensive Stroke Center. “Our multidisciplinary teams are trained to respond rapidly and effectively because time is brain—every second counts.”

The stroke centers also earned additional distinctions by meeting AHA targets. At least 50 percent of patients at the Comprehensive Stroke Centers received potentially lifesaving medication within 30 minutes of arrival, while 75 percent were treated within 45 minutes. This achievement led to their inclusion on the Stroke Elite Plus Honor Roll.

The centers further received the Stroke Honor Roll Advanced Therapy award for their prompt use of intervention devices such as stent retrievers or thrombectomy tools. For these complex cases, at least half of patients treated at a CSC location received device-based treatment within 90 minutes; transferred patients were treated within 60 minutes.

Both NYU Langone—Suffolk and the CSCs were recognized with the Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll for improving outcomes among stroke patients with type 2 diabetes—a condition that increases stroke risk.

At NYU Langone—Suffolk specifically, at least 85 percent of patients received medication within an hour of arrival, earning it a place on the Stroke Honor Roll Elite distinction list.

Beyond its work in stroke care, NYU Langone’s Department of Neurology addresses a broad range of nervous system disorders through diagnosis, treatment, and research. U.S. News & World Report ranks NYU Langone first nationally for Neurology and Neurosurgery.

NYU Langone Health operates seven inpatient locations along with over 320 outpatient sites in New York and Florida. It reports $14.2 billion in annual revenue and includes two tuition-free medical schools as well as a significant research enterprise. Vizient Inc. has ranked NYU Langone number one out of 115 comprehensive academic medical centers nationwide for three consecutive years; four clinical specialties have also recently achieved top national rankings according to U.S. News & World Report (https://www.usnews.com/best-hospitals/area/ny/nyu-langone-medical-center-6213080).
