Phyllis Sterne has created two funds to support neonatal care and nursing education at Stony Brook University Hospital. Her decision was influenced by her personal experience more than 40 years ago, when her daughter Ashley was born five weeks early and spent several weeks in the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

In 2021, Sterne established the Phyllis Zuckerwise Sterne and Family NICU Nurse Practitioner Scholarship. This scholarship is intended for graduate students enrolled in the Neonatal Nurse Practitioner Program at Stony Brook’s School of Nursing. Earlier this year, she expanded her commitment by creating the NICU Endowed Fund for Excellence. The fund is designed to provide ongoing support for programs, outreach efforts, and equipment needs within the NICU.

Thomas Diacovo, MD, vice chair of research and chief of neonatology at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital, commented on the contribution: “Phyllis Sterne’s generosity will have a lasting impact on the care we provide to our tiniest and most vulnerable patients.”

Additional details about Sterne’s contributions can be found in an article by Christine McGrath at SB Matters.
