PSEG Long Island has announced that its Power to Feed Long Island food collection initiative has gathered nearly 153,000 meals over the past five years. The campaign aims to help local residents facing food insecurity.
During the summer of 2025, community members were encouraged to donate at eight Stop & Shop locations across Long Island. These efforts resulted in more than 14,000 pounds of food and close to $7,000 in cash donations, totaling the equivalent of 25,800 meals. The collected items were distributed by Island Harvest Food Bank to local pantries, soup kitchens, and feeding programs.
David Lyons, Interim President and COO of PSEG Long Island, expressed gratitude for the support: “In the past five years, we have been so moved to see the amazing outpouring of kindness from Long Islanders in support of PSEG Long Island’s Power to Feed Long Island food collection initiative. This year we had a little boy donate his favorite foods after shopping with his dad. Another donor gave $100 online while standing at our tent. A group of PSEG Long Island employees set up a collection box in the office and made a significant donation. More than 50 PSEG Long Island employees volunteered at the events. I am so proud of my neighbors and coworkers for their philanthropy to this cause. Along with providing safe and reliable power, this is just another way PSEG Long Island supports our community during the year.”
Randi Shubin Dresner, president and CEO of Island Harvest Food Bank, noted ongoing challenges: “In light of proposed federal cutbacks, support from our longtime partner PSEG Long Island is more important than ever,” she said. “While many Long Island families struggle to put food on the table, the incredible support of PSEG Long Island and Stop & Shop, along with the generosity of their customers who helped make this year’s Power to Feed Long Island a tremendous success, will go a long way in helping our neighbors in need.”
Daniel Wolk from Stop & Shop added: “We were honored to once again host the Power to Feed Long Island food drive at our stores in partnership with PSEG Long Island and in support of Island Harvest Food Bank,” he said. “We are deeply grateful to our customers for their generosity and support. Because of them, nearly 26,000 meals will be distributed to help our Long Island neighbors facing food insecurity.”
The Power to Feed initiative began in 2021 as a response to increased needs during the pandemic. It was designed both as an awareness campaign about hunger issues on Long Island and as an opportunity for people living or working locally to contribute non-perishable foods or personal care items.
According to organizers, demand remains high during summer months when school meal programs pause for vacation breaks and fewer donation drives occur; rising inflation also adds pressure on families’ budgets.
This year’s events took place at Carle Place, East Northport, Levittown, Massapequa, Miller Place, Oceanside, West Babylon and Woodbury locations. Donors received reusable bags and LED lightbulbs as tokens of appreciation from PSEG Long Island staff present at each site who also provided information about financial assistance programs and energy efficiency options.
The online donation portal remains open for contributions through psegliny.com/feedli; every five dollars donated is estimated by Island Harvest as enough for ten meals.
