Heavy rain and wind gusts nearing 55 mph caused scattered power outages across Long Island and the Rockaways, according to PSEG Long Island. As of 7 a.m. Monday, the utility reported that 3,716 out of its 1.2 million electric customers were without power.

Since Sunday morning, PSEG Long Island has restored electricity to more than 17,400 customers affected by the storm. Outages remain dispersed throughout the service area.

The company stated that all employees have been mobilized for restoration efforts, including over 900 line workers, tree trimmers, surveyors, and other field staff. Additionally, about 580 personnel from outside the region are assisting with repairs.

“We expect the majority of customers impacted during the overnight to be restored today. We will continue to experience additional outages as the winds continue and we have enough personnel to respond effectively to these incoming outages,” said PSEG Long Island in a statement. “Crews have been working in difficult conditions throughout the night and will continue to work safely and as quickly as possible until all outages are restored.”

PSEG Long Island emphasized safety precautions for residents encountering downed wires or standing water. “Downed wires should always be considered ‘live.’ Stay as far away as possible from them, and if possible keep others, children, and pets away from the wire. Do not drive over or stand near any downed wire. To report a downed wire, call PSEG Long Island’s 24-hour Electric Service number at 800-490-0075 or call 911,” they advised.

They also reminded customers: “Electric current passes easily through water. If you encounter a pool of standing water, stop, back up and choose another path.” The company further cautioned against using generators indoors or close to windows or vents due to carbon monoxide risks.

Customers can report outages via text message by sending OUT to PSEGLI (773454), through the mobile app or website at psegliny.com/outages, or by calling their 24-hour service number at 800-490-0075. Updates are also available on social media platforms Facebook and X (formerly Twitter). The MyPower map provides real-time outage information at mypowermap.psegliny.com/.
