As National Preparedness Month coincides with the peak of hurricane season, PSEG Long Island is urging customers to take steps now to prepare for potential natural disasters and emergencies.

David Lyons, Interim President and COO of PSEG Long Island, stated, “Natural disasters and other emergencies can disrupt access to goods and services that support our day-to-day lives. Taking the time to prepare and having a plan limits the negative impact an emergency has on your household. The safety of our employees, customers and contractors has always been PSEG Long Island’s top priority, and we partner with groups like the United Way to help spread the word.”

PSEG Long Island has continued efforts to strengthen its electric grid in both Long Island and the Rockaways throughout the year.

The company recommends several actions for customers: maintaining a battery-powered radio with fresh batteries; checking supplies of flashlights, blankets, nonperishable food, and bottled water; creating emergency communication plans; developing evacuation plans; charging mobile devices in advance; keeping cash on hand in case banks are inaccessible after a storm; filling vehicle fuel tanks; securing outdoor furniture; compiling emergency phone numbers including PSEG Long Island’s 24-hour Electric Service number (1-800-490-0075); discussing storm safety with family members; reviewing safety tips at psegliny.com/safetyandreliability/stormsafety; following updates on Facebook and X (formerly Twitter); and treating all downed wires as live hazards.

For those using life-support equipment at home, PSEG Long Island offers a Critical Care Program. Eligible customers can receive enhanced notifications during severe weather by enrolling online at psegliny.com/myaccount/customersupport/customerassistanceprograms/criticalcareprogram. The company notes that while it will make every effort to restore power quickly for these individuals, timely restoration cannot be guaranteed in all situations.

Customers are encouraged to stay connected through multiple channels: downloading the mobile app for outage reporting and updates, texting OUT to PSEGLI (773454), calling 800-490-0075 for outages or downed wires, monitoring social media accounts for real-time information before, during, and after storms, or viewing outage maps at mypowermap.psegliny.com.
