Sixteen startups from the United States and abroad have been selected as semi-finalists for the 11th annual 43North startup competition, according to an announcement by Governor Kathy Hochul. The companies will compete in Buffalo on October 16 for a share of $5 million, with five winners each receiving a $1 million investment.

The semi-finalists represent a range of industries including cleantech, fintech, advanced manufacturing, artificial intelligence, food technology, and digital health. This year’s cohort includes two companies from the United Kingdom and others from cities such as San Francisco, Chicago, Miami, New York City, and Buffalo.

Governor Hochul stated: “43North continues to attract world-class startups that don’t just do business here, they plant roots and become part of the fabric of Western New York. With the momentum building across this region, more founders are choosing Buffalo as the place to grow, create jobs and fuel innovation. I congratulate this year’s semi-finalists and look forward to seeing them take the stage on October 16, as they showcase the ideas that are shaping the future of New York State.”

Nearly 1,000 applications were submitted for this year’s competition. A panel consisting of over 100 venture capitalists from North America reviewed entries and helped select the top contenders.

43North is supported by Empire State Development and has played a significant role in Buffalo’s emergence as a hub for startups. In addition to funding, selected companies receive mentorship opportunities, office space in Buffalo, access to investors, and resources aimed at helping them scale their businesses. Since its founding in 2014, 43North has invested in 74 companies globally; these firms have created more than 3,000 jobs worldwide and raised over $1 billion in capital.

Colleen E. Heidinger, President of 43North said: “The caliber of this year’s semi-finalists reflects the ever-evolving strength and momentum of Buffalo’s startup ecosystem. We’re seeing applicants from across the globe — including two Semi-Finalists from the U.K. — and we’re especially proud to have a Buffalo-based startup among the top 16. It’s a powerful reminder that world-class innovation can emerge from anywhere — and increasingly, it’s happening right here in Western New York. These founders are tackling big challenges across diverse industries, and their choice to compete for a place in Buffalo is a testament to the energy and opportunity taking root in our region. We look forward to the community joining us at Shea’s on October 16 to welcome them and show why Buffalo is such a compelling place to grow.”

Since its inception over ten years ago with backing from New York State agencies like Empire State Development (https://esd.ny.gov/), 43North has contributed significantly to economic growth both locally in Buffalo and globally through job creation by portfolio companies.
