The Spirit of Stony Brook (SOSB) Marching Band celebrated its 20th anniversary at this year’s Homecoming event. The band was established in 2005, following a request from then-President Shirley Strum Kenny and under the direction of John Leddy, the first director of Athletic Bands. Twenty musicians performed at the inaugural halftime show during that year’s Homecoming football game.
After two years, the group adopted the name Spirit of Stony Brook in 2008. Under Leddy’s leadership until 2013, the band became a regular presence at campus events, including football games and both men’s and women’s basketball games.
The SOSB Marching Band has also gained attention outside campus, performing on national platforms such as “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition,” New York City’s Columbus Day Parade, a Pepsi Super Bowl Halftime commercial, a music video, and most recently at the New York City Pride March in 2025.
Membership has grown significantly over time, with more than 200 members participating at some points. Pamela Pfeil is serving as interim director for this milestone season. Pfeil also works as associate director of Military and Veteran Student Services and is one of the band’s founding members. She said, “As a founding member of the band, it helped shape my life as a student, and it’s been an anchor in my heart ever since.” She added, “The Spirit of Stony Brook is more than music — it’s often the first impression visitors get of our campus and a touchstone of pride for the community. For our members, it’s a support system that welcomes students of all backgrounds, majors and ability groups.”
