The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), together with the New York State Department of Health (DOH) and the Cattaraugus County Health Department, is currently investigating a possible organic waste discharge into Ischua Creek. This investigation follows reports of a significant die-off of fish and wildlife in the area.
Authorities have issued an advisory for the public to avoid all contact with Ischua Creek downstream of Franklinville. The advisory covers recreational activities such as fishing, boating, swimming, and consuming fish from the creek. The restriction will remain in place until further notice.
Officials stated that there is no evidence at this time suggesting that public drinking water supplies have been affected. Local water systems have been informed about the situation and are conducting precautionary monitoring.
“Protecting the health of New Yorkers and the environment is the top priority and DEC field teams are monitoring water quality, tracking the movement of the discharge downstream, and assessing impacts to aquatic life. Additional updates will be provided as information becomes available,” according to a statement from state officials.
