Jeremy Dennis, a 2013 graduate of Stony Brook University, has curated an exhibition at the Zuccaire Gallery that focuses on Indigenous language in contemporary art. Originally entering Stony Brook as a computer science major, Dennis later switched to art and has since built a career with national recognition. His work has been displayed at venues such as the New York State Museum’s Contemporary Native American Art Collection, and he received the Dreamstarter Award from Running Strong for American Indian Youth for his photography project “On This Site.”
Dennis is a member of the Shinnecock Nation and uses his art to highlight his community’s history and culture. He was recognized in 2017 as one of Stony Brook University’s 40 Under Forty honorees and continues to engage with the university by speaking in art classes.
His latest project, “Weaving Words, Weaving Worlds: The Power of Indigenous Language in Contemporary Art,” features works by 26 Indigenous artists from across the United States. The exhibition examines how artists use their work to engage with Algonquian languages spoken on Long Island and throughout the Northeast, along with other Indigenous languages.
“Weaving Words, Weaving Worlds” is currently open at Zuccaire Gallery.
