Stony Brook University’s Department of Music continues its effort to bring live music to the campus community through the ‘Art of the Violin’ program. Jennifer Frautschi, artist-in-residence, launched the initiative in 2015 with the goal of making classical music more accessible by offering free performances outside traditional concert venues.

The concerts are held in the Melville Library Galleria, providing opportunities for both passersby and intentional audience members to listen to chamber groups that include violins, violas, cellos, basses, and occasionally piano or wind instruments. The events take place two to three times each semester during Campus Lifetime on Mondays and Wednesdays from 12:30 pm to 1:30 pm.

Frautschi explained her motivation for organizing these concerts: “give people a little break from everything else going on in the world and enjoy the power of music and live musical performance.” She also noted that performing in this format allows musicians to connect with a broader audience in a more intimate setting.

Upcoming ‘Art of the Violin’ performances are scheduled for Wednesday, October 22, and Wednesday, November 12, both at 1 pm. Information about these events can be found on the Music Department’s concert listings page. The department also shares updates on Instagram @stonybrookmusic.
