Stony Brook University Campus Store unveils remodel focused on student engagement

The Stony Brook University Campus Store has undergone a significant transformation, featuring a new design and an updated approach to campus retail. Formerly known as Shop Red, the store now operates under the name SBU Campus Store and serves as the university’s official source for licensed apparel, school supplies, custom merchandise, and gifts.

The Auxiliary Services Association (ASA) led the remodel with a focus on improving both aesthetics and function. The updated space includes brighter interiors, a more open layout, soft seating, and an adjacent lounge area near Starbucks. The redesign aims to create a welcoming environment that encourages students and staff to gather.

Diana Kubik, executive director of ASA, said, “We want the store to be an inclusive gathering space that offers a welcoming environment with brighter lighting, refreshed interiors, improved traffic flow, efficient checkout, and an intuitive, guest focused layout. Our exceptional team is committed to creating a memorable shopping experience where every member of the Seawolf community feels valued and supported.”

The store’s leadership includes Karla Gibbs as director of retail operations. Gibbs brings over 20 years of retail experience to her role at Stony Brook University.

A new feature in the store is an inspirational gifts section with items such as stationery, mugs, coasters, eco-friendly totes, and products made by Stony Brook students—ranging from lip gloss to jewelry and crocheted animals.

To streamline service for customers, traditional cash registers have been replaced by mobile point-of-sale technology. This allows staff to assist guests anywhere in the store and reduces wait times at checkout.

Since taking over self-operation in July 2024, ASA has expanded Stony Brook University’s licensing program through innovative branded merchandise. Denise Salzman serves as assistant director of marketing and communications for ASA and designs exclusive T-shirt collections that reflect current trends and campus spirit. These items have become popular among students and alumni.

Salzman also broadened the product lineup for fall with custom photo mugs, magnets, coasters, varsity jackets, and a dedicated T-shirt wall displaying her latest work.

Athletic apparel development was led by Salzman in partnership with ASA staff accountant Hannah Van Middelem. Van Middelem said: “I felt it was important to deepen the store’s connection to student-athletes and the broader fanbase,” stated Van Middelem. “As former collegiate athletes, Denise and I brought our firsthand experience of the athletic mindset into the design process. We know how vital it is for athletes to wear apparel that not only looks great but also reflects their dedication and team pride. Our goal was to create pieces that perform well and also resonate with all Seawolves, capturing the energy and spirit that unite our community.”

Student-designed apparel is featured both in-store and online through a program that gives participants real-world experience along with financial rewards; student designers receive $5 per shirt sold.

“By hosting T-shirt design contests each semester, we have empowered students to tell their story about what Stony Brook means to them. This exclusive merchandise creates products that students want, and we are proud to showcase their work through retail signage, displays, and marketing materials,” stated Salzman.

Custom ordering is available for campus departments or organizations seeking officially licensed apparel tailored specifically for their needs.

Director of Engagement and Guest Experience Dawn Villacci oversees efforts aimed at enhancing customer interaction through events such as workshops or focus groups designed around feedback from students.
