The Convergence lecture series at Stony Brook University will continue with a presentation titled “Get in the Game! Data Analytics Via Sports.” The event will focus on how data and statistics are used in professional sports to develop strategies for team success.

Tim Chartier, a professor of mathematics and computer science at Davidson College, will lead the lecture. Chartier is recognized as one of America’s leading experts in sports analytics. He has worked with several major professional sports leagues and has mentored students who have gone on to careers with organizations such as the NBA, MLB, NFL, NASCAR, and ESPN.

Chartier’s work has earned him multiple awards for research, writing, and teaching. He has also held leadership roles in national mathematics associations and received recognition from media outlets including Bloomberg and USA Today.

During his presentation, Chartier will discuss how data is integrated into athletics to help analysts optimize team rosters, predict game outcomes, and identify winning strategies. The session will include real-world examples as well as advice on education and career opportunities in the field. A question-and-answer segment is also planned.

The lecture is scheduled for noon on Saturday, November 22, at the Student Activities Center Auditorium. Admission is free but seating is limited; attendees are encouraged to reserve seats online.

Stony Brook University’s Institute for Creative Problem Solving organizes the Convergence lecture series in partnership with the National Museum of Mathematics (MoMath) and Brookhaven National Laboratory. The series aims to engage audiences with different aspects of mathematical thinking through talks that explore practical applications or abstract concepts.

More details about the event can be found on the Institute for Creative Problem Solving website.
