Stony Brook University is set to mark the Lunar New Year, celebrating the Year of the Fire Horse, with a campus event on Saturday, February 7. The celebration will be held from 4 pm to 6 pm at the Fine Arts Loop, located between the Charles B. Wang Center and the Administration Building. A fireworks display is scheduled for 5:45 pm.

The Lunar New Year spans 15 days and features traditions such as red envelopes, live performances, and a lantern festival. The university’s event will include performances, calligraphy activities, giveaways, crafts, and tabling. Heated igloos will be available for attendees.

According to organizers, “Lunar New Year is a 15-day celebration that involves various traditions such as red envelopes, live performances and a lantern festival to close out the festivities. The time is focused on togetherness, good luck and bringing positivity into the new year. The Year of the Fire Horse takes place once every 60 years on the lunisolar calendar, and the Chinese Zodiac signifies this year as one of change, growth and opportunity.”

Campus Fire and Emergency Services will be present during the fireworks for safety precautions. Attendees are advised that transit routes may be affected during this period; information about shuttle schedules can be found on the Mobility and Parking Services (MAPS) website.

Several Stony Brook University departments are participating in organizing this event. These include New Student and Transition Programs; Undergraduate Student Government; Student Engagement and Activities; Campus Residences; Stony Brook University Alumni Association; Auxiliary Services Association; Office of Global Affairs; SBU Libraries; Asian American and Pacific Islanders Heritage Committee; Diversity, Inclusion, and Intercultural Initiatives (DI3); and the Center for Korean Studies.
