More than 150 faculty members at Stony Brook University were recognized for their promotions during a ceremony earlier this semester. The annual event, now in its second year, highlights achievements in research, scholarship, teaching, and service across various academic fields.

Faculty who received recognition advanced to positions such as associate professor, associate clinical professor, or associate librarian. Others were promoted to full professor, full clinical professor, or full librarian. Of those promoted, 50 faculty members also earned tenure.

The celebration was co-hosted by Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost Carl W. Lejuez and Executive Vice President for Stony Brook Medicine William Wertheim, MD.

“If I could say one thing today, it’s to tell you to take a moment and celebrate this amazing accomplishment. We celebrate your research and scholarship and take inspiration from your commitment to mentoring and what you have done for your students,” said Lejuez. “We love to talk about rankings, but what makes Stony Brook special is the people and your commitment to collaboration, education, mentoring, and scholarship.”

Tenure-track faculty at Stony Brook University generally have seven years to meet the requirements for tenure. These include demonstrating excellence in teaching; contributing service to their discipline or the university—including clinical work where relevant; and producing research or scholarly work evidenced by grants, peer-reviewed publications, books, artistic works, or musical performances.

“Each of you is committed to pursue knowledge, to pursue wisdom and to pass it on to your students,” said Wertheim. “We are thrilled to have you as part of our vibrant academic community, not just for your ideas and not just for your innovation, but also for your commitment to doing the right things for the right reasons. I look forward to seeing how your work will continue to shape the future of our university and our broader communities.”
